Donna's Bits & Scraps

Ten Secrets for Scrapbooking Success

1) Scrapbook Space:

Have a place set up so that you can leave your scrapbook supplies out, even if it is a card table in the corner of your living room. You are more apt to work on your scrapbook projects if you don't have to drag our your supplies every time

2) Organize, Organize, and Organize!

  • Photos - organize your photo's chronologically, event, year etc. before scrapbooking to make the creative process go more smoothly. I have a lot of nice photos storage boxes in the store. Stop in and take a look.
  • Tools - sort tools so that you don't waste time looking for scissors or that one particular punch.
  • Paper - sort paper by color or theme.
  • Stickers - sort stickers by theme.
  • Embellishments - buttons, charms, brads, etc. should be sorted by color or theme whichever works the best for you.
  • Supply Log - keep a supply log so that you don't duplicate scrapbooking supplies.

3) Current Pictures First:

If you are behind in your scrapbooking (or just getting started) begin with your most recent photos. These events will be fresher in your mind and you won't get overwhelmed.

4) Ideas:

Get ideas for lay-outs from magazines, books, TV, and your friends. Scrapbooking friends can be a wealth of information with lay-out ideas and the greatest compliment that you can give a scrapbooker is to copy her lay-out idea.

5) Tool Repair:

If your cutter, scissors, corner rounder or punches start to stick, try cutting or punching through wax paper a few times. If this doesn't work clean the blades with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Baby wipes are also a great alternative.

6) Journaling:

The most beautifully designed page is not complete without journaling, even if it's just the who, what, where and when.

7) Color Wheel:

A color wheel is great for helping select colors that compliment and contrast with one another.

8) Don't Overdo the Embellishments:

As a general rule of thumb, a lay-out should be composed of photographs, a title and journaling. Embellishments/Stickers should be chosen to compliment but not over power the photos or journaling.

9) Page Protectors:

Finished scrapbooks should always have page protectors that are PVC free.  Page protectors are just what they say; they are protectors of the finished page. This keeps your scrapbook pages clean and dust/lint free when they are being stored or looked through.

10) Have Fun!!!

Scrapbooking should be an enjoyable past time/hobby that records your memories for this generation and the next. Your pages do not have to be completely balanced in color, shape or size nor do they need to be perfectly symmetrical. Your scrapbook should be a reflection of who you are!!

Until next time,

Happy Scrappin!!
